Shooting incidents in Negros Oriental, April-May 2020

Note: Negros Oriental was on Enhanced Community Quarantine from April 3 to 30, 2020, then General Community Quarantine starting May 1, 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

April 2, 8:30PM Christopher Entea, 42, construction worker. Shot dead by riding in tandem in Zamboanguita.

April 9, 6PM. Belarmino Geron Isolana, 56, close-in security of the Guihulngan City Vice Mayor, Brgy. Poblacion, Guihulngan City. Shot dead by riding in tandem while walking along the national highway in Brgy. Poblacion, Guihulngan City. The victim was a drug surrenderer (November 17, 2016).

April 10, 7:45PM. Rito Horolan Acabo, 45, owner of bakery business (Guihulngan City and La Libertad). The victim was shot dead by riding in tandem at Brgy. McKinley, Guihulngan City. Acabo’s 18-year old son was wounded. The victim was a drug surrenderer (December 15, 2016).

April 15, afternoon. Leovin Soreño Dela Torre, 40. Daro, Dumaguete City. The victim was shot dead by two unidentified men at his house. He suffered 27 gunshot wounds. He had been involved in a shooting incident some years ago.

April 22, late morning. Zelsun Blue “Coco” K. Behag, a native of Vallehermoso but currently residing in Guihulngan City. The victim was riding her motorcycle at So. Agay-ayan, Brgy. Bulado, Guihulngan City, when she was shot dead by riding in tandem. Her former live-in partner (in San Carlos City) had been arrested for drugs but Behag’s sister said that the victim had cut ties with him and not involved in drug business.

April 23, 9:40AM. Patrick Deogenes Cabristante Romero, 54, Brgy. 1, Bais City. The victim was shot dead by riding in tandem at Juan Luna Street, Brgy. 1, Bais City. The police said he was a police asset (informant) and a former drug personality who surrendered in 2017.

April 23, 11PM. Ryan Jay Beltran, 24, Brgy. Taclobo, Dumaguete City. The victim was already asleep when an unidentified person standing outside the victim’s house, shot him dead.

April 24, morning. The dead bodies of Joemar Rebitoy Castor, 33, and Arnel Villegas, 41, both of Purok Orchids, Brgy Calindagan, Dumaguete City, were found, half-naked, only wearing cargo shorts, at the roadside in Brgy. Mayabon, Zamboanguita. The two men had been reported missing by their relatives on April 22. The cause of death has not been established as of April 27.

April 27, 9:30AM. Pedro Ybañez Tecson, 44, farmer, Brgy. San José, Bayawan City. The victim was shot dead by another farmer due to a personal grudge.

May 5, 8:45PM. Cornelio Pepino, 48, radio broadcaster known as Rex Cornelia, Brgy. Blood-Boloc, Sibulan. The victim was on his way home together with his wife after hosting his radio program on Original Energy FM in Dumaguete City when he was waylaid by riding in tandem at Brgy. Daro, Dumaguete City. May 13 update: the car believed to have been used to tail the victim before the killing and used by the killer before he transferred to a motorcycle was recovered. It is owned by the provincial government . Update (May 27): a firearm found at the house if Rodel Barillo (shot dead by riding in tandem on May 12, see below) was used to murder Pepino, the police reported on May 27.

May 8, 7:25AM. Joseph “Jorom” Cacho Romano, 48, Brgy. Biñohon, Bais City. The victim was shot dead by riding in tandem along Juan Luna Street, Brgy. 2, Bais City. The victim was driving a motorcycle. His back rider was wounded.

May 8, afternoon. Franie Genandoy Avanceña, 56, Brgy. Basak, Guihulngan City. The victim was shot dead by riding in tandem at a waiting shed in Brgy. Basak, Guihulngan City. He was a drug surrenderer in July 2016 but arrested in November 2018 for selling drugs. The victim was out on bail.

May 10, 6:30PM. Feliciano Blanco Mahinay, Jr., 48, former CAFGU, So. Punong, Brgy. Trinidad, Guihulngan City. The victim was shot dead in front of his house by unidentified suspects.

May 10, 7:15PM. Dante Jimena , 44, jobless, So. Bulacan, Brgy. T. Hill, Guihulngan City. The victim was preparing food inside his house when he shot dead by unidentified suspect.

May 12, 8:20AM. Rodel Pamor Barillo, 37, co-owner of a security agency, Brgy. Kagawasan, Guihulngan City. The victim was taking breakfast with his brother at an eatery in Plaridel Street, Brgy. Poblacion, Guihulngan City, when suspects riding in tandem arrived and shot him dead. Update: a warrant of arrest in connection with the May 5 murder of Cornelio Pepino was to have been served on the victim.

May 13, 5:30PM. Elpedio Julwar dela Cerna Mahinay , 65, kagawad and former barangay chairman, So. Maambog, Brgy. Planas, Guihulngan City. The victim was tending to his cow at Upper Muog, Planas, when approached by unidentified suspects – suspected members of the New People’s Army – and shot dead.

May 20. Joseph Redocto Bitonga, 41, farmer, So. Budlasan, Brgy. Trinidad, Guihulngan City, was shot dead by two unidentified suspects In front of his house. The killing was reported at 7:45PM (Budlasan is far from the city proper).

May 20, 5:40PM. Roberto Alejo Silva, Upper Pancil, Brgy. Looc, Sibulan. The victim who was out of prison on probation in connection with a drug case was shot dead by three suspects .

May 26, 8PM. A 50-year old woman was shot and wounded by an unidentified assailant at Purok 2, Brgy. Malabugas, Bayawan City. The victim was shot in the cheek. She was brought to the hospital for medical treatment.

May 26, 8:45PM. Edward Uy, 22, Purok Pag-asa, Brgy. Banilad, Dumaguete City. The victim was shot dead by riding in tandem at Purok Pag-asa.

May 27, 4PM. Reynold “Junjun” Armentano Paquito, 34, Shin Village, So. Campaclan, Brgy. Poblacion, Sibulan, was sitting in front of his home with his 6-month old son when four suspects arrived on two motorcycles and opened fire. Paquito was killed while the infant was hit in the leg.

May 29, past 6PM. Basiledes Vergara Ledon , 59, public school teacher, Larena Street, Brgy. Poblacion, Guihulngan City. The victim was shot dead in Larena Street by bonnet-wearing assailants riding in tandem.
